Imitating the Mystery we celebrate……

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Saint Peter and Saint Paul were no strangers to hardship and suffering. Peter, crucified upside down, and Paul, beheaded outside the gates of the city of Rome, quite literally gave everything they had to offer for the sake of the Name and for the good of Christ’s Church. Paul in particular traveled the world to preach the gospel with love and conviction at a time when, on the one hand, world travel was pretty dangerous and, on the other, most people didn’t want to hear the good news!

But the Apostle, moved and motivated by the grace of the Holy Spirit, felt the irresistible need to accomplish two essential tasks. First, to help people hear the Lord asking, “Who do you say that I am?” And second, to help them answer that question with the faith of Peter himself: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God!”  And, dear friends, this work continues! Thus the Successor of St. Peter has asked us to turn our attention in a special way to the person and ministry of St. Paul for the next 12 months; to contemplate his love for Jesus, for the Scriptures, for the Eucharist, for his brothers and sisters; and to learn to emulate his glorious example that in some small way we too may be known as men and women (no matter how young or how old!) who “handed on to others what we ourselves received.”  Can and will this be difficult at times? Yes. Will we face hardship, ridicule, and rejection? Probably.  Will it ultimately be worth it when we see the Lamb of God seated at the right hand of the Father. ABSOLUTELY.  So like blessed Paul, let us compete well, let us finish the race, let us keep the faith…for the crown of righteousness awaits all those who do!  St. Peter and St. Paul, pray for us!

In the hearts of Jesus and Mary,

Fr. Paul

A Warm Parish Welcome – This week we are blessed to have with us Br. Terrence Skarka, CP speaking to us about the important work of the Passionist Overseas Missions. Let us all give him our full attention, and as we begin this Year of St. Paul the Great Preacher let us also provide prayerful and financial support for their efforts to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ! (Please note: The Peter’s Pence Collection will be taken up NEXT SUNDAY!)

Prayers and Best Wishes – Let us offer prayers and thanks to God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ for the gift of three new priests in our Diocese: Rev. David Bechtel, Rev. Gregory Reichlen and Rev. John Victoria, ordained yesterday in the Cathedral Church of St. Peter, Scranton. May the Lord who chose and consecrated these men preserve them in his grace and lead all of us, through their sacred ministry, to the joys of the Kingdom. Our hearts are filled with joy, thus only one question remains: Who will be next??? If the Lord is calling you, do not be afraid!

Novena in Honor of St. Paul – Beginning this week, each Wednesday morning we will offer novena prayers in honor of St. Paul. It is our hope that this devotion will bear fruit in four principal ways: 1. An increased devotion to our Lord and recommitment to evangelization in each of us; 2. A greater response in our parish and in our diocese to the call to priesthood by those men who, like St. Paul, have been ‘set aside’ for the work of ministry; 3. A deeper understanding of and appreciation for the beauty of our Catholic faith; and 4. To make intercession for the personal intentions of our parish family.
